Ingredient profile
Berberine in Slim Metrix: How Much Is There, and Is It Enough?
Slim Metrix lists berberine HCl fourth in its 276 mg blend, so one capsule holds at most about 69 mg. NCCIH says weight effects were seen mainly above 1 gram a day, and even that evidence is not conclusive (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss). One capsule gives well under a tenth of that amount.

The basics
What is the berberine in Slim Metrix?
Berberine is a compound found in several plants. NCCIH names European barberry, goldenseal, goldthread, Oregon grape, phellodendron and tree turmeric as sources (NCCIH, Berberine in the news).
The Slim Metrix label prints it as "HCL (from Berberis aristata Root 97% Berberine)." In plain words, that is berberine HCl, a salt form, taken from the root of Berberis aristata. The powder is 97% berberine.
It is popular online for weight loss, but NCCIH says the evidence is too thin to know if it works (NCCIH, Berberine in the news).
| Label name | HCL (from Berberis aristata Root 97% Berberine) |
|---|---|
| What it is | Berberine HCl from the root of Berberis aristata, 97% berberine |
| Type | Plant alkaloid |
| Position on the label | 4 of 8 in the blend |
| Amount per serving | Not printed (at most about 69 mg by label order) |
| What research shows | Weight effects were seen mainly above 1 g a day; trials used 300-1,500 mg a day |
| Strength of evidence | Small trials, far higher doses |
| Why it is in the formula (brand view) | The ingredient social media calls a weight-loss aid |
| Main caution | Not for pregnancy, breastfeeding or infants. It interacts with cyclosporine; ask first if you take any medicine. |
Blend math
How much berberine does one Slim Metrix capsule hold?
The label gives no number. Its place in the list sets the ceiling.
At most about 69 mg of berberine HCl. The 276 mg blend shows no single amounts, but FDA rules say blend ingredients must be listed from heaviest to lightest (FDA, Labeling guide ch. IV). Berberine is fourth, so it cannot weigh more than 276 divided by 4.
- 1Alpha-lipoic acid35 to 276 mgListed first: the largest share, at least about 35 mg
- 2Green tea leaf extract (80% catechins, 50% EGCG)0 to 138 mgAt most about 110 mg catechins and 69 mg EGCG
- 3Milk thistle seed extract (80% silymarin)0 to 92 mg
- 4Berberine HCl (97% berberine)0 to 69 mgStudies of weight used 300-1,500 mg a day
- 5Resveratrol (Polygonum cuspidatum root extract 200:1)0 to 55 mg
- 6Cayenne fruit (40,000 H.U.)0 to 46 mgH.U. is a heat rating, not a capsaicin amount
- 7Korean ginseng aerial extract (8% ginsenosides)0 to 39 mg
- 8Banaba leaf extract (2% corosolic acid)0 to 34 mgAt most about 0.69 mg corosolic acid
Blend ingredients are listed from heaviest to lightest (FDA, Labeling guide ch. IV), so the ingredient in place k can weigh at most 276 ÷ k mg. That is our math from the label, not a lab test; the real amounts are probably lower. Zinc (5.5 mg) and chromium (50 mcg) sit outside the blend with their own amounts.
That is a ceiling, not a measurement; the real amount is probably lower. Every line of the panel is decoded on the Supplement Facts page.
Dose check
How does Slim Metrix's berberine compare with research doses?
The gap is large. Weight and waist trials used 300 to 1,500 mg a day (Liu et al., Front Pharmacol 2025), and glucose trials mostly used 0.9 to 1.5 g a day (Xie et al., Front Pharmacol 2022). At its ceiling, one capsule gives about 7% of a 1,000 mg day.
| Source | Who was studied | Daily dose | Slim Metrix ceiling as a share |
|---|---|---|---|
| NCCIH weight summary | Mostly people with diabetes or fatty liver, mainly in Asian countries | Effects mainly above 1 g | Under 7% |
| Liu 2025, 12 trials | 889 participants, metabolic syndrome measures | 300 to 1,500 mg | About 5% to 23% |
| Xie 2022, 37 trials | 3,048 adults with type 2 diabetes | Mostly 900 to 1,500 mg | About 5% to 8% |
| Slim Metrix, 1 capsule | Adults, per the label | At most about 69 mg | Ceiling, not a measured amount |
Weight
Does berberine help with weight loss?
Maybe a little, at high doses, and the evidence is shaky. A 2022 review of 18 weight studies and 23 BMI studies found small drops, but NCCIH calls the evidence not conclusive (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss).
Many studies had a high risk of bias, and most people in them had diabetes or fatty liver disease (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss).
A 2025 meta-analysis of 12 trials found BMI fell by about 0.44 points. With two low-quality trials removed, the drop was no longer significant. Waist size fell by about 3.3 cm in 4 trials (Liu et al., Front Pharmacol 2025).
For a person 5 feet 6 inches tall, one BMI point is roughly 6 pounds. A 0.44 drop is under 3 pounds, after about 3 to 5 months on 300 to 1,500 mg a day.
No trial of Slim Metrix itself exists. More detail is in the berberine and weight loss article.
Blood sugar
What does berberine do to blood sugar?
In type 2 diabetes, berberine has a modest glucose effect (NCCIH, Berberine in the news). A 2022 review of 37 trials put numbers on it.
Fasting glucose fell by 0.82 mmol/L, about 15 mg/dL, and HbA1c by 0.63 points. Thirty of the 37 trials used 0.9 to 1.5 g a day (Xie et al., Front Pharmacol 2022).
The Slim Metrix sales page says it "helps maintain healthy blood-sugar already within normal range" (Slim Metrix sales page). Normal means an A1C under 5.7% and fasting glucose of 99 mg/dL or lower (NIDDK, Diabetes tests). The berberine trials do not show what about 69 mg does for someone whose numbers are already normal.
Studied doses were mostly 13 to 22 times the Slim Metrix ceiling.

Is berberine a substitute for Ozempic or Wegovy?
No. Semaglutide, sold as Ozempic and Wegovy, is a prescription medicine approved by FDA for long-term weight management. With a lifestyle program, adults on such medicines lose 3% to 12% more of their starting weight at one year (NIDDK, Weight medicines).
NIDDK says not to combine them with other weight-loss products unless a clinician says so (NIDDK, Weight medicines). Compare every option on the weight-loss options page.
Safety
Who should not take berberine?
Pregnancy, breastfeeding, infants
NCCIH says pregnant or breastfeeding people should not use it. It can cause or worsen newborn jaundice, which can lead to kernicterus (NCCIH, Berberine in the news).
Cyclosporine and other drugs
Berberine interacts with cyclosporine and might interact with other medicines (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss). Bring the label to your pharmacist.
Diabetes medicines
It can lower glucose a little. Lows below 70 mg/dL are a known risk with insulin, sulfonylureas and meglitinides (NIDDK, Hypoglycemia).
The usual side effects are digestive: nausea, belly pain, bloating, constipation and diarrhea (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss). Every caution for the whole capsule is on the side effects page.
Bottom line
Is the berberine in Slim Metrix worth it?
For weight, probably not. It is a real research ingredient, but one capsule holds a small fraction of any studied dose.
In its favor
- Named clearly, with its plant source and purity.
- Fourth of eight, so it is not a trace ingredient.
- Not hidden in a vague complex.
Against it
- No printed amount; about 69 mg is only a ceiling.
- Trials used 300 to 1,500 mg a day.
- No trial at this dose.

FAQ
Berberine in Slim Metrix: common questions
How much berberine should I take for weight loss?
No dose is proven to work for weight. NCCIH says weight effects were seen mainly above 1 gram a day, and trials used 300 to 1,500 mg a day. Ask your doctor before trying any amount.
Is 69 mg of berberine enough to do anything?
Probably not for weight. About 69 mg is the most one Slim Metrix capsule could hold. That is roughly 5% to 23% of trial doses, and no study has tested this amount.
Can I take berberine with metformin?
Ask your doctor first. Berberine had a modest glucose effect in type 2 diabetes trials and might interact with medicines. None of our sources tested this pairing, so check your readings closely.
What are the side effects of berberine?
Mostly digestive: nausea, belly pain, bloating, constipation and diarrhea. NCCIH says it is generally well tolerated by mouth, but not for pregnancy, breastfeeding or infants.
Is berberine the same thing as barberry?
Not quite. Berberine is one compound found in barberry and other plants, such as goldenseal and Oregon grape. The Slim Metrix label sources it from Berberis aristata root.
Does berberine work like Ozempic?
No. Ozempic contains semaglutide, a prescription medicine. Berberine is a supplement whose weight data are small and not conclusive. Never swap one for the other without your prescriber.
