Berberine and Weight Loss: What the Studies Really Show

Quick answer

Berberine studies show small, uncertain changes. NCCIH says weight effects were seen mainly above 1 gram a day and the evidence is not conclusive (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss). A 2025 review found waists about 3.3 cm smaller, but the BMI change faded once weak trials were removed (Liu et al., Front Pharmacol 2025). One Slim Metrix capsule holds at most about 69 mg.

The brand's ingredient graphic gives berberine its own tile. The label lists it fourth of eight in a 276 mg blend, with no amount printed.

The basics

What is berberine, and why is it linked to weight loss?

Berberine is a compound found in plants such as barberry, goldenseal, Oregon grape and tree turmeric. It became popular on social media as a weight-loss aid (NCCIH, Berberine in the news).

The hype ran ahead of the science. NCCIH says there is not enough rigorous evidence to know if it helps weight; the stronger signal is for glucose in type 2 diabetes (NCCIH, Berberine in the news).

Slim Metrix lists berberine as "HCL (from Berberis aristata Root 97% Berberine)," which means berberine HCl from tree turmeric root. It is the fourth of eight ingredients in the capsule's 276 mg blend.

Weight

Does berberine help you lose weight?

Possibly a little, at high doses, in some groups. NCCIH describes a 2022 review of 18 weight studies and 23 BMI studies that found decreases, but calls the evidence not conclusive (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss).

Three problems hold the research back, per NCCIH:

  • Many studies had a high risk of bias.
  • Most people studied had diabetes or fatty liver disease, not just extra weight.
  • Most studies were done in Asian countries, so results may not carry over.

The dose matters most. Weight effects were mainly seen at more than 1 gram a day (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss).

The numbers

What did the newest berberine reviews find?

Small changes, at doses far above what a blend can hold.

Two berberine meta-analyses: who was studied, the doses and the results. Sources: (Liu et al., Front Pharmacol 2025) (Xie et al., Front Pharmacol 2022).
ReviewTrials and peopleDaily doseMain result
Liu 2025, metabolic syndrome12 trials, 889 people300 to 1,500 mgWaist down 3.27 cm; BMI down 0.44, not significant after weak trials removed
Xie 2022, type 2 diabetes37 trials, 3,048 adultsMostly 0.9 to 1.5 gFasting glucose down 0.82 mmol/L; HbA1c down 0.63 points

The Liu review did not report body weight as its own outcome (Liu et al., Front Pharmacol 2025). In the Xie review, 36 of 37 trials were done in China, and most carried a moderate risk of bias (Xie et al., Front Pharmacol 2022). Both call for better trials.

Dose check

How much berberine is in one Slim Metrix capsule?

The label does not say. The order of the blend sets a ceiling of about 69 mg.

Blend amounts are ceilings from the order of the list (the ingredient in place k can weigh at most 276 ÷ k mg). That is our math, not a lab test; the real amounts are probably lower. Research figures are amounts used in studies, not proof that any dose works.

Blend ingredients are listed from heaviest to lightest (FDA, Labeling guide ch. IV). Berberine is fourth in a 276 mg blend, so it can weigh no more than 276 ÷ 4, about 69 mg. The real amount is probably lower, since alpha-lipoic acid, green tea extract and milk thistle sit above it.

That is at most about 7% of the 1 gram mark. The label says one capsule a day; never take more. The math is on the Supplement Facts page.

Blood sugar

Does berberine affect blood sugar in people without diabetes?

That has not been shown. The glucose results come from adults with type 2 diabetes taking 0.9 to 1.5 g a day (Xie et al., Front Pharmacol 2022), and NCCIH calls the effect modest (NCCIH, Berberine in the news).

The Slim Metrix sales page says the product "helps maintain healthy blood-sugar already within normal range" (Slim Metrix sales page). In medical terms, normal is an A1C below 5.7% with fasting glucose at 99 mg/dL or less (NIDDK, Diabetes tests). No study we found tested berberine at blend-sized doses in people already in that range.

In fairness

Berberine is a real research compound. The issue is the dose, not the plant.

Safety

What are the side effects of berberine?

Mostly stomach trouble. NCCIH lists nausea, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation and diarrhea (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss), and those were reported at research doses, far above one capsule.

Avoid

Pregnancy and infants

May be unsafe in pregnancy or breastfeeding. In infants it can worsen newborn jaundice, which can lead to kernicterus (NCCIH, Berberine in the news).

Interactions

Cyclosporine and more

Berberine interacts with cyclosporine. Talk with your provider if you take any regular medicine (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss).

Diabetes

Glucose medicines

Combined with insulin or a sulfonylurea, ingredients that nudge glucose could add up. Lows mean below 70 mg/dL (NIDDK, Hypoglycemia).

Bottom line

Is berberine worth trying for weight loss?

Not as a main tool. The best case is a few centimeters of waist and a fragile BMI drop, at gram doses, mostly in people with diabetes or fatty liver.

If you want to try Slim Metrix, think of its berberine as a minor part of a small blend, not the engine of weight loss. The steps that move the scale are still food, activity and sleep (CDC, Losing weight). See the how-it-works guide for the whole formula and the berberine profile for dose and safety.

FAQ

Berberine and weight loss FAQ

What berberine dose was used in weight loss studies?

There is no proven weight-loss dose. Trials used 300 to 1,500 mg a day (Liu et al., Front Pharmacol 2025), and NCCIH says weight effects showed up mainly above 1 gram a day, with weak evidence overall (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss). Talk to your doctor before any dose, especially if you take medicine.

Is berberine nature's version of Ozempic?

No. That nickname comes from social media, not research. Semaglutide is a prescription drug tested in large trials. Berberine studies are small, often biased and mostly in people with diabetes, and NCCIH says there is not enough rigorous evidence to know if it helps weight (NCCIH, Berberine in the news).

How long does berberine take to work?

Trials in the 2025 review ran 84 to 140 days, about 12 to 20 weeks (Liu et al., Front Pharmacol 2025). Glucose trials ran from 14 days to 6 months (Xie et al., Front Pharmacol 2022). Those timelines used gram doses, so they do not tell you what a small blend dose would do.

Can a small berberine dose like 69 mg help with weight?

Probably not for weight. About 69 mg is the most that can be in one Slim Metrix capsule by its place on the label, and the real amount is likely lower. That is about 7% of the 1 gram a day where NCCIH says weight effects were mainly seen.

Who should not take berberine?

Pregnant or breastfeeding people should not use it, and it should never be given to infants because it can worsen newborn jaundice (NCCIH, Berberine in the news). People on cyclosporine or diabetes medicines should check with their doctor first, since berberine can interact with drugs.

Is berberine hard on the stomach?

It can. Nausea, bloating, cramps, constipation and diarrhea are the most common complaints in studies (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss). Those came from research doses. If symptoms continue, stop and talk with your doctor.
