Ingredient profile

Milk Thistle in Slim Metrix: Third in the Blend, Unclear on the Liver

Quick answer

Milk thistle seed extract is third in the Slim Metrix 276 mg blend, so one capsule holds at most 92 mg, or about 74 mg of silymarin at the label's 80%. NCCIH calls the liver research conflicting or too limited, finds no weight data, and warns of allergy in people sensitive to ragweed or daisies (NCCIH, Milk thistle).

The basics

What is milk thistle in Slim Metrix?

Milk thistle is a flowering plant, Silybum marianum. Slim Metrix uses an extract of its seeds, standardized to 80% silymarin, the mixture of compounds NCCIH names as its main constituent (NCCIH, Milk thistle).

It is third of eight in the proprietary blend, behind alpha-lipoic acid and green tea extract. The label prints no amount. The profile below sets the label line next to the research.

Blend math

How much milk thistle is in one Slim Metrix capsule?

At most 92 mg of extract. Watch where milk thistle lands among the eight shares.

Proprietary Blend: 276 mg per capsule, 8 ingredients, no single amountsBars show the most each ingredient could weigh, from its place in the list. Average: about 35 mg each.
  1. 1Alpha-lipoic acid35 to 276 mgListed first: the largest share, at least about 35 mg
  2. 2Green tea leaf extract (80% catechins, 50% EGCG)0 to 138 mgAt most about 110 mg catechins and 69 mg EGCG
  3. 3Milk thistle seed extract (80% silymarin)0 to 92 mg
  4. 4Berberine HCl (97% berberine)0 to 69 mgStudies of weight used 300-1,500 mg a day
  5. 5Resveratrol (Polygonum cuspidatum root extract 200:1)0 to 55 mg
  6. 6Cayenne fruit (40,000 H.U.)0 to 46 mgH.U. is a heat rating, not a capsaicin amount
  7. 7Korean ginseng aerial extract (8% ginsenosides)0 to 39 mg
  8. 8Banaba leaf extract (2% corosolic acid)0 to 34 mgAt most about 0.69 mg corosolic acid

Blend ingredients are listed from heaviest to lightest (FDA, Labeling guide ch. IV), so the ingredient in place k can weigh at most 276 ÷ k mg. That is our math from the label, not a lab test; the real amounts are probably lower. Zinc (5.5 mg) and chromium (50 mcg) sit outside the blend with their own amounts.

Blend ingredients are listed from heaviest to lightest (FDA, Labeling guide ch. IV), so the third one can weigh no more than 276 ÷ 3, or 92 mg. At 80% silymarin, that is at most about 74 mg of silymarin. Those are ceilings from our own math, not a lab test, and the real amounts are probably lower.

Reading the label

What does "80% silymarin" mean on the Slim Metrix label?

It means the extract is standardized so that 80% of its weight is silymarin. The label line reads "Milk Thistle (Silybum marianum) Seed Extract 80% Silymarin." Each part tells you something.

NCCIH adds a quality note: some milk thistle products tested with silymarin amounts different from their labels, and some held contaminants (NCCIH, Milk thistle). No third-party test of Slim Metrix is published. Lot and CoA codes from the seller are reference numbers, not lab proof. See the full panel on the Supplement Facts page.

The liver

Does milk thistle protect the liver?

The research does not settle it. NCCIH says liver studies of milk thistle are conflicting or too limited to draw conclusions. Two studies it funded, in hepatitis C and in fatty liver disease (NASH), showed no benefit (NCCIH, Milk thistle).

That matters in this formula. Green tea extract, second in the blend, is a known though rare cause of liver injury, with more than 100 cases reported, most tied to extract pills and multi-ingredient weight-loss products (LiverTox, Green tea). No source we cite shows that milk thistle prevents that kind of injury. Do not count on it as a safety net.

Liver warning signs

Dark urine, yellow skin or eyes, or belly pain while taking a product with green tea extract needs a doctor promptly. LiverTox notes these injuries usually appear 1 to 6 months after starting (LiverTox, Green tea). Read more on the green tea extract page.

Blood sugar and weight

Does milk thistle help with blood sugar or weight loss?

For weight, there is nothing to go on: NCCIH's milk thistle page does not discuss weight at all (NCCIH, Milk thistle). For blood sugar, a small number of studies, mostly from Middle Eastern countries, suggest milk thistle may help control it in people with type 2 diabetes (NCCIH, Milk thistle).

Small studies in people with diabetes do not show what a capsule does for someone whose blood sugar is already normal. The sales page frames its blood sugar claim as support for levels "already within normal range" (Slim Metrix sales page). That is the seller's framing, not a tested result.

  • Milk thistle is not a diabetes treatment.
  • Its blood sugar studies are few and small.
  • No weight data exist in the NCCIH summary.

Safety

Who should avoid milk thistle?

People with ragweed-family allergies should be the most careful. NCCIH says milk thistle appears well tolerated for most people, with mainly digestive side effects (NCCIH, Milk thistle).

Allergy

Ragweed and daisy family

Milk thistle may cause allergic reactions in people allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemum, marigold or daisy (NCCIH, Milk thistle).

Common

Upset stomach

Bloating, nausea and gas are the side effects NCCIH lists (NCCIH, Milk thistle). Taking the capsule with breakfast is a simple first step.

Pregnancy

Little is known

Safety in pregnancy and breastfeeding is not well studied. Slim Metrix also contains berberine, which should not be used then (NCCIH, Berberine in the news).

For every caution across the formula, see the side effects page.

FAQ

Milk thistle in Slim Metrix: common questions

How much milk thistle is in Slim Metrix?

The label does not say. Milk thistle seed extract is third in a 276 mg blend, so one capsule holds at most 92 mg of extract and about 74 mg of silymarin at 80% standardization. The true amount is probably lower, since five ingredients follow it.

Does milk thistle detox the liver?

No good evidence shows that. NCCIH says liver studies are conflicting or too limited, and two NCCIH-funded trials in hepatitis C and fatty liver disease found no benefit (NCCIH, Milk thistle). No cited source supports using it as a cleanse.

Does milk thistle help you lose weight?

There is no weight data to support it. NCCIH's milk thistle summary does not discuss weight (NCCIH, Milk thistle). Its research focuses on the liver and, in a few small studies, blood sugar in type 2 diabetes. It is not a reason to expect a change on the scale.

Is it safe for the liver to take milk thistle and green tea extract together?

Milk thistle does not make it safer, as far as any source we cite shows. Green tea extract is a rare but known cause of liver injury (LiverTox, Green tea), and milk thistle's own liver research is inconclusive (NCCIH, Milk thistle). Watch for dark urine, yellow eyes or belly pain and seek care promptly if they appear.

Is milk thistle safe if I am allergic to ragweed?

Be careful. NCCIH says milk thistle may cause allergic reactions in people allergic to ragweed, chrysanthemum, marigold or daisy (NCCIH, Milk thistle). If you have that allergy, ask your doctor before trying Slim Metrix or any milk thistle product.

What are the side effects of milk thistle?

Mostly digestive: bloating, nausea and gas, according to NCCIH (NCCIH, Milk thistle). Allergic reactions can occur in people sensitive to the ragweed family. Little is known about safety in pregnancy or breastfeeding, and Slim Metrix's berberine rules it out then anyway.
