Alpha-Lipoic Acid in Slim Metrix: First in the Blend, Missing From the Graphics
Alpha-lipoic acid is listed first in the Slim Metrix 276 mg blend, so it is the largest share: somewhere between about 35 mg and 276 mg per capsule. Studies cited by Memorial Sloan Kettering used 600 to 1,800 mg a day and give no weight data. It can lower blood sugar, which matters if you take diabetes medicine (MSKCC, Alpha-lipoic acid).

The basics
What is alpha-lipoic acid in Slim Metrix?
Alpha-lipoic acid is an antioxidant your body makes on its own and also gets from food. On the Slim Metrix label it is simply "Alpha Lipoic Acid," the first name in the proprietary blend.
It is not a plant extract and it has no standardization percentage. The label gives no amount for it, only its place in line. The profile below shows the label facts next to the research.
| Label name | Alpha Lipoic Acid |
|---|---|
| What it is | Alpha-lipoic acid (thioctic acid), an antioxidant the body also makes |
| Type | Antioxidant |
| Position on the label | 1 of 8 in the blend (the largest share) |
| Amount per serving | Not printed (at most 276 mg, at least about 35 mg) |
| What research shows | Studies cited used 600-1,800 mg a day, mostly for nerve and blood sugar questions |
| Strength of evidence | Not studied here for weight |
| Why it is in the formula (brand view) | Listed first, yet left off the brand's ingredient graphic |
| Main caution | Can lower blood sugar and may add to diabetes medicines. A burning feeling in the throat or stomach is the common side effect. |
Blend math
How much alpha-lipoic acid is in one Slim Metrix capsule?
Somewhere between about 35 mg and 276 mg; the label does not say. FDA rules list blend ingredients from heaviest to lightest, with only the blend's total weight printed (FDA, Labeling guide ch. IV). Being first, it weighs at least as much as each of the other seven.
| Place in the blend | 1 of 8, the largest share |
|---|---|
| Most it could weigh | 276 mg, the whole blend (in practice less, since seven other ingredients share the space) |
| Least it could weigh | About 35 mg, if all eight shared 276 mg equally |
| Daily amounts in cited studies | 600 mg to 1,800 mg by mouth |
| Ceiling as a share of 1,800 mg | About 15% |
| Single amount printed? | Not published |
The real amount is probably well below the ceiling. Green tea extract, milk thistle and berberine also need room in the same 276 mg. See the Supplement Facts page for the full blend line.
Brand graphics
Why is alpha-lipoic acid left off the Slim Metrix graphics?
The brand does not explain it. Its "Inside Slim Metrix" graphic shows tiles for six ingredients: chromium, zinc, green tea extract, berberine, resveratrol and milk thistle. Alpha-lipoic acid, the blend's top ingredient, is not among them.
The "Why Choose" graphic does the same. Its formula tile reads "chromium + zinc + green tea + berberine + resveratrol & more." The "more" quietly covers alpha-lipoic acid, milk thistle, cayenne, ginseng and banaba.
That is not a hidden ingredient, because the Supplement Facts panel names it plainly. It is a reminder to read the panel, not the marketing tiles, when you want to know what you are taking.

Dose check
How does Slim Metrix's alpha-lipoic acid compare with study doses?
The second bar is alpha-lipoic acid, shown at its 276 mg ceiling. The others give context.
Say alpha-lipoic acid filled the whole blend. One capsule would still hold only about 15% of the 1,800 mg a day in one cited trial. It would be under half of the 600 mg used in others (MSKCC, Alpha-lipoic acid). The gap is larger still for berberine, which sits fourth.
Weight
Does alpha-lipoic acid help with weight loss?
The sources we use do not show it. Memorial Sloan Kettering's review of alpha-lipoic acid gives no weight data at all (MSKCC, Alpha-lipoic acid).
That fits the wider picture. NCCIH says none of the supplements studied for weight control has been shown to work, and many products sold as fat burners have never been tested for safety (NCCIH, Weight control). The sales page's "fat-metabolism pathways" wording describes the formula as a whole, which has not been studied either (Slim Metrix sales page).
Alpha-lipoic acid is a well-known antioxidant with real research behind it. Most of that research used doses many times higher than a 276 mg blend allows. Its presence is not evidence that the capsule changes weight.

Order nowBlood sugar
Can alpha-lipoic acid lower blood sugar?
Yes, it can. Memorial Sloan Kettering notes that alpha-lipoic acid can lower blood sugar, that high doses can cause symptoms of low blood sugar, and that it may add to the effect of diabetes medicines (MSKCC, Alpha-lipoic acid).
Slim Metrix has four other ingredients with a similar flag: chromium, berberine, ginseng and banaba. Each amount is small. Together, though, they are a reason to talk to your doctor first if you take insulin or another glucose-lowering drug.
For many people with diabetes, low blood glucose means below 70 mg/dL. Shakiness, hunger, dizziness, confusion, a fast heartbeat and headache are common signs. NIDDK advises 15 to 20 grams of glucose or carbohydrate, then a recheck in 15 minutes (NIDDK, Hypoglycemia).
Side effects
What are the side effects of alpha-lipoic acid?
A burning feeling
In a 236-patient trial, the most common side effect was a burning feeling from the throat to the stomach (MSKCC, Alpha-lipoic acid). Taking the capsule with breakfast and a full glass of water may feel gentler.
Lower blood sugar
Most relevant for people on insulin or other diabetes drugs. Check readings more often in the first weeks if your doctor agrees.
Studied doses
The cited studies used 600 mg a day or more. One Slim Metrix capsule holds less, though the exact amount is not printed.
If anything feels wrong, stop and contact your doctor. Every caution for the whole formula is on the side effects page.

FAQ
Alpha-lipoic acid in Slim Metrix: common questions
How much alpha-lipoic acid is in Slim Metrix?
The label does not print it. Alpha-lipoic acid is first in a 276 mg blend of eight ingredients, so it is somewhere between about 35 mg and 276 mg per capsule. With seven other ingredients sharing the blend, the real amount is likely well under the top of that range.
Does alpha-lipoic acid burn belly fat?
No source we cite shows that. Memorial Sloan Kettering's review of alpha-lipoic acid gives no weight data (MSKCC, Alpha-lipoic acid), and NCCIH says no supplement studied for weight control has been shown to work (NCCIH, Weight control). Treat belly-fat promises for any antioxidant with doubt.
What dose of alpha-lipoic acid is used in studies?
Studies cited by Memorial Sloan Kettering used 600 mg three times daily for 12 weeks, 800 mg a day for 4 months, and 600 mg a day given by vein (MSKCC, Alpha-lipoic acid). One Slim Metrix capsule holds at most 276 mg, and likely less.
Can alpha-lipoic acid cause low blood sugar?
It can, especially at high doses or with diabetes medicines (MSKCC, Alpha-lipoic acid). If you take insulin or a sulfonylurea, ask your doctor before starting Slim Metrix, which also contains chromium, berberine, ginseng and banaba. Readings below 70 mg/dL count as low for many people with diabetes (NIDDK, Hypoglycemia).
Why does alpha-lipoic acid cause a burning feeling?
The sources we cite do not explain why, but they report it. In a 236-patient trial, a burning feeling from the throat to the stomach was the most common side effect (MSKCC, Alpha-lipoic acid). Taking your capsule with food and water is a sensible first step.
Is alpha-lipoic acid the main ingredient in Slim Metrix?
By weight, it is the largest share of the blend, since the label lists it first. Yet the brand's ingredient graphics leave it out and highlight chromium, zinc, green tea, berberine and resveratrol instead. The Supplement Facts panel is the reliable list.
