Fat burners explained
Do Fat Burners Work? 6 Numbers From NIH, NCCIH, CDC and the FTC
Fat burner is a marketing term, not a medical one. The best numbers are small: about 0.95 kg for green tea extract, about 0.75 kg for chromium, and no effect on body weight from capsaicin at 4 mg a day over 12 weeks. NCCIH says no studied supplement has been shown to work for weight loss.

Key facts
- Fat burner means a product sold to raise calorie burn or cut appetite. It has no legal or medical definition.
- Green tea extract: about 0.95 kg more loss than placebo, none in the six studies outside Japan.
- Chromium: 0.75 kg more loss across 21 trials, which NIH says has little clinical significance.
- Capsaicin trimmed about 74 calories a meal in studies, but 4 mg a day for 12 weeks did not change body weight.
- Resveratrol: no weight effect in 40 trials with 2,551 people.
- FDA has found hidden drugs in weight-loss products sold as supplements.
- Slim Metrix lists no caffeine amount and no capsaicin amount, so its thermogenic label is a sales page idea.

The term
What is a fat burner, and what does it claim to do?
A fat burner is a product sold on the idea that it speeds calorie burn, trims appetite or both. The words thermogenic, metabolism booster and appetite suppressant often sit on the same label. None of them is a medical category. They are sales words.
Most use the same short list of ingredients: caffeine, green tea extract, capsaicin from hot peppers and a few herbs. The mix is the product. Because labels often hide the amount of each part in a blend, it is hard to know what you are getting.
6 numbers
Do fat burners work? The 6 numbers that matter
| Number | What it measures | Source |
|---|---|---|
| 0.95 kg | Extra loss with green tea extract versus placebo across 14 trials; none in the 6 studies outside Japan | (NIH ODS, Weight-loss supplements) |
| 0.75 kg | Extra loss with chromium across 21 trials in 1,316 adults; little clinical significance | (NIH ODS, Chromium) |
| 74 calories | Meal intake trimmed by capsaicinoids; body weight did not change at 4 mg a day over 12 weeks | (NIH ODS, Weight-loss supplements) |
| 0 effects | Resveratrol on weight, BMI or fat mass across 40 trials and 2,551 people | (Shen et al., In Vivo 2026) |
| 3% to 12% | Extra loss at one year with FDA-approved medicines plus a lifestyle program | (NIDDK, Weight medicines) |
| 1 to 2 pounds | The weekly pace CDC links to loss that is more likely to last | (CDC, Losing weight) |
There is one more figure worth knowing. Catechins alone had no effect on body weight in the studies NIH reviewed. Catechins plus caffeine gave about 1.38 kg more loss than caffeine alone (NIH ODS, Weight-loss supplements). The small benefit seems to come from the pair.
Exercise
Do fat burners work without exercise or diet?
Nothing we use suggests so. The FTC lists weight loss without dieting or exercise as a claim that simply cannot be true for a supplement (FTC, Gut Check). It also says products promising lightning-fast loss are always a scam (FTC, Weight loss ads).
CDC names healthy eating, regular activity, enough sleep and stress management as the parts of healthy weight loss (CDC, Losing weight). Its activity guide asks adults for 150 minutes of moderate activity a week (CDC, Adult activity). A capsule can sit on top of that. It cannot replace it.
Safety
Are fat burners safe, or a scam?
Some are fine at small doses, and some are not. The honest answer is that it depends on the ingredients, the doses and you. NCCIH says many products sold as fat burners have never been tested for safety (NCCIH, Weight control).
- Hidden drugs. In 2014 FDA found that Slim-K, sold for weight loss, contained sibutramine, a drug withdrawn from the U.S. market in 2010. FDA says it cannot test every product (FDA, Hidden drug notice).
- Liver injury. Green tea extract is a well-established but rare cause of liver injury, usually 1 to 6 months after starting (LiverTox, Green tea).
- Stimulant effects. Green tea contains caffeine, and green tea extract can raise blood pressure in some people (NCCIH, Green tea).
- Drug interactions. Some ingredients change how medicines work. Show the label to your pharmacist.
Being a scam is a separate matter. A product can be honestly labeled and still too weak to matter. A scam hides what is in the bottle or what the terms are.
Ingredients and side effects
What do thermogenic fat burner ingredients do, and what side effects come with them?
Thermogenic means producing body heat, which burns a little energy. Capsaicin is the classic example. Memorial Sloan Kettering says its thermogenic and appetite effects are small and vary from person to person, and cayenne can irritate the stomach (MSKCC, Cayenne).
Caffeine and green tea extract bring jitters, poor sleep, nausea and, rarely, liver trouble. Ginseng's most common side effect is insomnia (NCCIH, Asian ginseng). Berberine's are digestive (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss). Many fat burners stack several of these, which makes side effects easier to hit and harder to trace.
Fat burner dosage is therefore not one number. It is whatever the label says, and the label serving is the limit. Do not double it. As for the best time to take fat burner supplements, a morning dose keeps stimulants away from bedtime.
Judging a label
How do you judge a fat burner label or price before you buy?
- Look for printed amounts. A blend with one total and no single amounts hides what you pay for.
- Look for a trial of the actual product. The FTC says health claims should rest on human trials of the same dose and formula (FTC, Health Products Guidance).
- Look for a named maker and a lab report. A badge is not a document.
- Read the refund terms. Postage, return rules and the window length all change the real price.
- Ignore the countdown timer. A timer tells you nothing about the capsule.
We do not rank products or name a best fat burner for 2026. No source we use ranks them, and a list that claims to is usually an ad.
Where Slim Metrix fits
Where does Slim Metrix fit among fat burners?
The sales page calls it Thermogenic Fat-Burning Capsules. The label does not. Cayenne is sixth of eight in the 276 mg blend, caffeine is not listed and no capsaicin amount is printed. Berberine is at most about 69 mg a capsule, against weight effects seen mainly above 1 gram a day (NCCIH, Berberine and weight loss). No trial of the formula exists.
Slim Metrix passes the basic label test: every ingredient is named, zinc and chromium are printed and the refund window is written. It fails the evidence test, like most fat burners. Treat it as a small extra and decide by day 45.
FAQ
Frequently asked questions
Do fat burners work?
Not much, in the best studies. Green tea extract gave about 0.95 kg more loss than placebo, chromium about 0.75 kg, and capsaicin did not change body weight in a 12-week trial. NCCIH says no studied supplement has been shown to work for weight loss.
Are fat burners safe?
It depends on the product. FDA has found hidden drugs in weight-loss products sold as supplements, and green tea extract is a rare cause of liver injury. NCCIH says many fat burners have never been tested for safety.
Do fat burners work without exercise?
Nothing suggests so. The FTC lists weight loss without dieting or exercise as a claim that cannot be true for a supplement. CDC says healthy eating, activity, sleep and stress management are the base.
What does a fat burner do?
It is sold to raise calorie burn or cut appetite. In studies, ingredients such as green tea extract, chromium and capsaicin showed small effects at best, at doses that vary by trial.
Is Slim Metrix a fat burner?
The sales page calls it Thermogenic Fat-Burning Capsules, but the label makes no such claim. It is a dietary supplement with zinc, chromium and a 276 mg blend, and no published trial.
Are weight loss supplements safe without side effects?
No supplement is free of possible side effects. Even mild products can upset the stomach or sleep, and some interact with medicines. Ask your doctor first, take only the label dose and stop if something feels wrong.
Bottom line
Our view
Fat burners are a small-effect, high-hype category. The best numbers we found are around one kilogram, in studies of single ingredients at their own doses. That is not nothing, and it is not what the ads imply.
Use that as a filter. If a product promises more than about a kilogram, ask for the trial. If it hides amounts, ask why. If it has a timer, ignore the timer. And keep the plan that works for most people: food you can keep up, activity you enjoy and sleep you protect.
A fat burner is a poor fit if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, on diabetes medicine, a blood thinner or levothyroxine, or if you have had liver trouble. Ask your doctor first. Read our guide to what thermogenic means and the side effects page.
