Chromium and Cravings: What the Evidence Really Says
The evidence that chromium curbs cravings is preliminary, resting on a single study NIH cites (NIH ODS, Chromium). For weight, a 2019 review of 21 trials found 0.75 kg more loss than placebo, which NIH calls of little clinical significance. Slim Metrix gives 50 mcg of chromium per capsule, about 143% of today's Daily Value, though its label prints 41.67%.

The basics
What is chromium, and why is it sold for cravings?
Chromium is a trace mineral your body needs in tiny amounts. Supplements often use chromium picolinate, the form in Slim Metrix, and are sold for blood sugar and cravings.
The appeal is easy to see. If a mineral could quiet the urge for sweets, sticking to a plan would be easier. The Slim Metrix sales page claims the product "supports balanced appetite and reduced cravings" (Slim Metrix sales page). Chromium is the ingredient most often tied to that kind of claim.

Cravings
Does chromium reduce sugar cravings?
Maybe, but the evidence is thin. NIH's chromium fact sheet says preliminary research suggests chromium might reduce food intake, hunger and fat cravings, and it cites a single study for that point (NIH ODS, Chromium).
One study is a starting point, not an answer. It needs to be repeated in more people, at known doses, before anyone can say chromium reliably curbs cravings. No study has tested the 50 mcg in Slim Metrix for appetite.
CDC suggests keeping a food diary for a few days to spot patterns, and getting enough sleep (CDC, Losing weight). Both help you see when and why cravings hit.
Weight
Does chromium picolinate help with weight loss?
Very slightly. Across reviews, chromium users lost under about 1 kg more than people on placebo, an amount experts call of little clinical meaning.
| Review | Size | Result vs placebo | Verdict |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2019 meta-analysis | 21 trials, 1,316 adults | 0.75 kg more weight loss; 0.40 BMI points; no waist change | Little clinical significance |
| 2013 Cochrane review | 9 trials | About 1.1 kg more weight loss | Debatable clinical relevance |
| Body fat (2019 review) | Same 21 trials | 0.68% more body-fat reduction | Small |
To put 0.75 kg in plain terms: it is under 2 pounds, averaged across 21 trials. CDC's target for healthy loss is 1 to 2 pounds a week (CDC, Losing weight).
Slim Metrix
How much chromium is in Slim Metrix?
50 mcg per capsule, printed on the label as 0.05 mg.
- Zinc 5.5 mg vs the 11 mg Daily Value50% DV
- Chromium 50 mcg vs today's 35 mcg DV (label prints 41.67%)143% DV
- Zinc 5.5 mg vs the 40 mg adult upper limit14% of UL
Daily Values and the zinc upper limit come from NIH fact sheets. The chromium bar is capped at 100%; the label's 41.67% matches 50 ÷ 120, not today's 35 mcg DV.
Chromium is one of only two ingredients with a printed amount. The label lists it as 41.67% of the Daily Value. Today's Daily Value is 35 mcg (NIH ODS, Chromium), so 50 mcg is about 143%. The label's percentage matches 50 ÷ 120, which uses an outdated figure.
That is not a safety problem. Adults need roughly 20 to 35 mcg a day, and no upper limit has been set (NIH ODS, Chromium). It does mean the %DV on the bottle is not a reliable guide. See the chromium profile for more.

Order nowBlood sugar
Does chromium help with blood sugar?
The results are mixed. NIH says glucose findings are inconsistent, and the American Diabetes Association has said the evidence is not strong enough to support chromium for glucose control (NIH ODS, Chromium).
FDA allows only a qualified health claim, one that must call the link between chromium and insulin resistance or type 2 diabetes highly uncertain (NIH ODS, Chromium). The trial NIH describes used 1,000 mcg a day, twenty times the amount in one Slim Metrix capsule.
The sales page frames its claim as support for blood sugar "already within normal range" (Slim Metrix sales page). Normal fasting glucose is 99 mg/dL or lower (NIDDK, Diabetes tests). That wording is a structure/function claim, not a promise to treat anything.
Totals
Are you getting too much chromium or zinc from all your supplements?
Add your other products to see the total.
Multivitamins and other blood sugar formulas often contain chromium. Zinc is the one to watch: the adult limit is 40 mg a day from all sources, and Slim Metrix adds 5.5 mg (NIH ODS, Zinc). The zinc profile explains the copper issue.
Safety
Who should be careful with chromium supplements?
People on diabetes medicine or thyroid medicine. Chromium may add to the glucose-lowering effect of insulin and other diabetes drugs, and chromium picolinate taken at the same time lowered levothyroxine absorption in a small study (NIH ODS, Chromium).
- Thyroid pills: take levothyroxine and chromium hours apart, and ask your pharmacist about timing.
- Diabetes medicine: ask your doctor before adding chromium.
- Kidney or liver disease: NIH says these people may be more sensitive to chromium (NIH ODS, Chromium).

FAQ
Chromium and cravings FAQ
Does chromium picolinate stop sugar cravings?
It has not been shown to. NIH says early research suggests chromium might reduce hunger and fat cravings, but it points to just one study (NIH ODS, Chromium). That is too little to count on. A food diary and enough sleep are better-supported first steps.
How much chromium should I take a day?
Most adults need about 20 to 35 mcg a day, depending on age and sex, and the Daily Value on labels is 35 mcg (NIH ODS, Chromium). No upper limit is set. One Slim Metrix capsule supplies 50 mcg, so most people do not need extra chromium on top.
Is 41.67% the right Daily Value for 50 mcg of chromium?
The number matches 50 mcg divided by 120 mcg, an older Daily Value. Today's Daily Value for chromium is 35 mcg (NIH ODS, Chromium), so 50 mcg works out to about 143%. We cannot say why the label uses the older figure; check the bottle you receive.
How long does chromium take to work for cravings?
There is no reliable answer, because the craving data come from one preliminary study (NIH ODS, Chromium). Weight trials found only small effects. If you try a product with chromium, track hunger and weight for four weeks and judge by your notes.
Should people on diabetes medicine avoid chromium?
Talk to your doctor first. Chromium may add to the glucose-lowering effect of insulin and other diabetes drugs (NIH ODS, Chromium), and several other Slim Metrix ingredients may do the same. Lows below 70 mg/dL can cause shakiness and confusion (NIDDK, Hypoglycemia).
Is chromium safe for long-term use?
At normal doses it appears to be, and no upper limit has been set (NIH ODS, Chromium). NIH still advises caution with high doses and notes that people with kidney or liver disease may be more susceptible. Your doctor should know every supplement you take.
